Recently in Toronto a female television reporter confronted two men who ran up to her microphone and yelled the obscenity known as “FHRITP”. One of these men was fired from his job as a result, igniting a firestorm of controversy over his being fired for actions he took on his own time, away from the workplace. One aspect of this matter which has not been directly addressed, to my knowledge, is the chilling effect on free speech if this precedent should be broadened to include any utterances which could be considered to be “inappropriate” or “politically incorrect”.
