Florida Sheriff mouths off about Toronto Mayor Rob Ford

Here is the text of an email I sent to Sheriff Gordon Smith of Bradford County, Florida, regarding his public bragging  about arresting a local political figure…

Sheriff Smith:

There was a report in the Toronto Sun yesterday headed “Sheriff on drug bust of Florida mayor: This isn’t Toronto”.

You are quoted as saying “He should have resigned, he should have had the cojones to go ahead and resign and say, Hey, I messed up, I represent the people, the people are the ones that elect me and I’ve messed up and I’ve brought shame and therefore I’m going to step down and do the right thing.”

Who the hell do you think you are to tell us up here, in a different country, how to run our affairs?  Then again, you hold elected office yourself, so perhaps this is just a cheap shot at an easy target, made in order to bolster your own public image and increase your chances of re-election.

It may interest you to know that Rob Ford is held in high regard because of his excellent track record with regards to fiscal responsibility.  His personal problems are sad indeed, and most of us are wishing him all the best in obtaining help and being re-elected next year.

Toronto is the fourth-largest municipality in North America, with over 5,000 police officers on staff.  Perhaps you are reaching beyond your salary range…
