Former Aussie PM interview upsets Jewish Affairs Council

“Israel years ago, during one of the wars, killed 30 or 40 Americans on a spy ship in the Western Mediterranean,” Fraser told Faine… Asked by Faine if he agreed that “the pro-Israel and in particular Jewish community lobby in Australia wielded too much power”, Fraser responded, “They certainly do.”

The above quotes are taken from the article “Mad claims from former PM” appearing in the Australian Jewish News yesterday, commenting on former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser’s remarks about the USS Liberty and the Israel Lobby made while being interviewed on ABC.

The subject of the interview was Fraser’s new book “Dangerous Allies” co-authored with Cain Roberts. The main focus of the book is that Australia has in the past always sought to ally itself with great powers, first Britain, and now America. Fraser wants an end to this, and wants to see a “truly independent Australia”.

We are not told if Fraser’s book discusses Israel as being “dangerous”, but his comments on ABC, including his observation that former Foreign Minister Bob Carr is quite right in saying that the pro-Israel lobby has far too much power, was enough to cause a greatly-aggrieved response by Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council national chairman Mark Leibler and others.

The article is an enlightening read in itself, and Fraser’s book may well be of interest to Australian readers regardless of whether or not it contains any criticism of the Lobby.
