Six items in total… today, we look at the Conservative Party and Warren Kinsella’s sleazy attacks on Maxime Bernier and the People’s Party of Canada.
“Daisy will create an arm’s-length organization that cannot be linked to the client or any participating organization. This organization will run a proxy war room public relations campaign that allows real Canadians to shine a light on the prejudice and hate that is associated with the PPC” – An unidentified Daisy Group consultant, quoted by Cosmin Dzsurdzsa in “Conservatives paid Warren Kinsella’s firm to discredit Maxime Bernier’s PPC” – The Post Millennial, October 20th, 2019.
“This is the kind of dirty politics that fuels Canadians’ cynicism about politics… This secret campaign is an attack on the integrity of our democratic process. We had suspected for a long time that many of the supposed scandals of the last month had been fabricated by opponents.” – Maxime Bernier, quoted by Global News in “Scheer refuses to say whether Tories hired strategist to ‘seek and destroy’ People’s Party” – October 19th, 2019.
“It hardly comes as a surprise that the Conservative Party of Canada would be behind such disgraceful and cowardly tactics… As our Leader Maxime Bernier stated when he left the CPC and repeated on numerous occasions since then, they are ‘morally and intellectually corrupt.’ And today, this story proves it without a doubt” – PPC executive director Johanne Mennie, quoted by the CBC in “Kinsella consulting firm worked to ‘seek and destroy’ Bernier’s PPC party: Documents” – October 19th, 2019.
“Kinsella didn’t confirm or deny the project to the Globe, but said generally his firm has worked on anti-racism campaigns. Later in the day, after his social media accounts vanished from the internet, he posted a statement on his website defending his work, which he said ended ‘many months ago… It was always going to be disclosed, by law. It was in no way inappropriate or wrong… Opposing organized bigotry is always appropriate and right. We were and are fiercely proud of the work we did” – Allison Jones, “Scheer won’t say if Conservatives hired consultant to ‘destroy’ People’s Party” – CTV News, October 19th, 2019.
“People’s Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier has filed a complaint to the Commissioner of Canada Elections to get to the bottom of what he called a ‘secret’ smear campaign waged against him… During a news conference Saturday, Bernier said the party will retain legal advice and will use all tools at its disposal to get answers on the Conservative Party of Canada’s potential role in that campaign. He also wants answers on who was behind the entry of a Rhinoceros Party candidate in his Beauce, Que., riding who has the same name as him… Bernier said that was a deliberate attempt to confuse voters.” – Kathleen Harris, “Bernier files complaint to elections watchdog over ‘secret’ campaign to smear his party” – CBC, October 19th, 2019.
“It’s unbelievable… The Globe and Mail and other media revealed last night that the Conservative Party paid Warren Kinsella’s consulting firm to wage a covert campaign to discredit the People’s Party… Kinsella is a professional mudslinger and a former strategist for the Liberals… While our seven staffers were busy setting up a new party based on the principles of fairness and respect, four Kinsella employees paid by Andrew Scheer were working full-time to ‘seek and destroy’ our party with fabricated accusations of racism… This is what I meant when I said the Conservative Party is ‘morally and intellectually corrupt’.” – From the People’s Party of Canada email bulletin dated October 19th, 2019.
