Well blows out 80 miles off the coast of Vermilion Parish

VermilionToday.com: September 2nd, 2010

US Coast Guard is responding to a fire in the Gulf of Mexico in Vermilion Block 380, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay off Louisiana.

Coast Guard received reports around 9 am this morning of an oil rig on fire and people in the water.

A Coast Guard spokesman said it has launched two helicopters from Houston and three from New Orleans to rescue survivors. Also, the cutter Decisive has been dispatched and three more cutters are on the way.

The lease owner is Mariner Energy, which was being bought out by Apache.

The Coast Guard was unable to confirm whether the structure burning is in fact a fixed platform.
