Underground toxin dumping threatens our survival (Raw Story)

I have been given permission by “The Raw Story” to reproduce the first three paragraphs of the following article, plus a link to the original.

My thanks to them.  I have heard it said that, on a personal level, whatever we are doing now is very likely the result of decisions we made ten, twenty, or even thirty or more years before.  In the story below, we see how decisions made decades ago by others, without any input from us, could affect our future health and even our survival.

Add the practice of “fracturing” to the equation, and you may feel (as I do) that corporations are risking humanity’s very existance for short-term financial gain.

Over the past several decades, U.S. industries have injected more than 30 trillion gallons of toxic liquid deep into the earth, using broad expanses of the nation’s geology as an invisible dumping ground.

No company would be allowed to pour such dangerous chemicals into the rivers or onto the soil. But until recently, scientists and environmental officials have assumed that deep layers of rock beneath the earth would safely entomb the waste for millennia.

There are growing signs they were mistaken.
