“BICOM, the Britain Israel Communication and Research Centre, is one of those bodies established by the Labour Friends of Israel, a powerful pro-Israeli lobby group inside the Labour party, which is dedicated to promote support for Israel in the UK.”
A recent interesting article by Press TV draws attention to BICOM, which it claims has extensive influence in the British media, organizes counter-demonstrations against pro-Palestinian protesters, and takes British politicians and other influential people on “propaganda tours”.
We are told that an email sent last year by the then-Director of BICOM, Lorna Fitzsimons, reads in part: “Throughout the weekend, Bicom staff were in contact with a whole host of BBC and Sky news desks and journalists, ensuring that the most objectively favourable line was taken, and offering talking heads, relevant to the stories unfolding.”
Then again, Press TV may be somewhat miffed at BICOM as it “…collaborated earlier this year with the state-controlled British Office of Communication (Ofcom) to block the alternative English-language channel Press TV in the UK.”
Wikipedia’s “Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre” page describes it as a pro-Israel advocacy or lobby group. This would be consistent with its desire to shut down pro-Palestinian voices such as Press TV. We are also told that Lorna Fitzsimons said at the Herzlya Conference in 2010 that “public opinion does not influence foreign policy in Britain. Foreign policy is an elite issue”, which is somewhat confusing, but I suspect that BICOM works at both the public and ‘elite’ levels.
A man described as a key figure in BICOM, arms-dealer Chaim ‘Poju’ Zabludowicz, was a donor to Pargav, the not-for-profit organization that funded Adam Werritty’s controversial trips abroad while representing himself as an official emissary of Britain’s Defence Minister. This was not the case, and Werrity’s travels and misrepresentations were funded by a nongovernmental organization he established of which three of the principal donors are linked to pro-Israel organizations.
One may wonder how much priviliged information Werrity came into possession of through this deceitful impersonation. And, just exactly what his relationship with the Defence Minister was, and where the information he obtained, if any, was sent… In any event, the Defence Minister lost his job as a result.
If I belonged to a union in Britain, I would be greatly interested in finding out just how much of my dues-money is being funneled through the Labour Party to “sanitize” Israel’s mass murder, gross violations of human rights, and disregard for U.N. resolutions and international law.
And, possibly, espionage.
